Helping you Choose a Fax Machine
Fax machines still continue to play an important role in communication within the workplace and at home. There are three main types of print technology which are outlined below:
Inkjet
Inkjet fax machines are a good choice if you want to send and receive information that contains graphics but are for more infrequent users. The print quality is higher than thermal but the consumable costs can be expensive if the machine is used for high volume transmissions.
Laser
Laser is the best choice for heavy usage departments. These machines are faster than inkjet and thermal and have the highest quality print. The print cost is low per page based upon the cost of the consumables.

Thermal
Thermal is the original print technology for fax machines – it uses heat to transfer the message to the paper. Thermal machines are generally cheaper than other print types but the cost per page is high due to the consumables being more expensive. These machines are a good choice for low volume use where documents sent are mainly text.
So in summary before making a decision here are some points for you to think about:
- How good does the print quality need to be? – see above information on print technologies.
- Who will be faxing? - if it is the same people often then do you need a machine with speed dials?
- How often will the machine be used? - for low volume you could have a thermal or inkjet machine but for high volume usage a laser would be more economical.
- Do you want a telephone? – some machines come with built in telephone answering machines so if you don’t want to miss a vital call then buy a machine with this function.
